...The shoddiness, in any case, of Miss Hellman's argument can be revealed by proposing an equivalent: "The uncritical support given Stalinist Russia by people like Dashiell Hammett and other literary people led, possibly against their wishes, to a whitewash of Gulag Archipelago and the murder of millions, and for this the fellowtraveling intellectuals must inevitably be held responsible...

...Pick up the first issue of Dissent in 1954 and you'll find an opening piece--either by Lew Coser or myself, I forget which—attacking McCarthy as a bum and criticizing some of the Commentary people for their waffling...

...It was not even typical of all the editors of Commentary, since as Nathan Glazer recently wrote in that magazine, he did attack McCarthyism in its pages during the early 1950s when he was one of its editors...

...But his attempt retrospectively to exonerate the magazine from Miss Hellman's charges seems to me, on this point, very feeble...

...Its overwhelming stress was to blame the developing Cold War on the U.S...

...She has earned the right to be proud of her record in defying the HUAC bums, though her explanation of why some of her friends, like Clifford Odets, lost their nerve and gave names to the Committee is very disturbing...

...Do you really think we didn't know about Gulag Archipelago until Solzhenitsyn published his remarkable book...
