...The result has been a subsidy system that promotes large farms, penalizes small farms, and stimulates the flow of population into the cities, where the poor buy food at high prices which the Federal government supports using their tax revenues...

...Hardly anyone actually defends the welfare state anymore...
...and then (c) decides that, as dealing with this unnecessary trouble is its main occupation, the maintenance of the interference which causes this trouble is a high feature of its own professional interest or even (so it kids itself) of its political ideal...

...Before long Government subsidies produced a vast expansion of graduate schools, and this produced an army of teachers...

...A Distinctive Political Style In fact, the real significance of the welfare state is that it represents a distinctive political style...

...and it prevents the domination of a stable, solid and possibly tyrannical majority...
...Such discipline is encouraged by living in a society where men learn the need to their own energies for the satisfaction of their own appetites...

...Usually the welfare state acts when some elected official finds it in his political interest to use the power of the state, and the money of the people, to promote the welfare of an interest group...
