Letters

LETTERS Hebrew School I read Robert Milch's article "The Home and the Hebrew School" with great interest. I was very excited by Milch's concept, and by the results for Lushy, his son. I felt that...

...Despite all the problems, the afternoon Hebrew schools often give a student a recognition of the importance of K'lal Yisrael...
...Lushy learned more, true—true if one is comparing his ability to read Hebrew and his ability to understand certain conceptual ideas...
...books, desks, materials when they are over-used and tired...
...and i\o matter how exciting the curriculum nor how stimulating the book and the teacher, the class is subject to discipline problems and parental unconcern...
...If the article is meant to be funny, then it is in uncommonly poor taste...
...teachers when they are tired...
...In the years to come, I would be interested in seeing if Lushy's devotion to K'lal Yisrael, his support for synagogues and community institutions, increased or decreased, compared to those students in community schools...
...They give the student the opportunity to interact socially and academically in a Jewish setting with other students who may share their interests and concerns, their discontents and their needs...
...The issues of vegetarianism are moral and health issues...
...to see where he is today, compared to his age-mates in conventional Hebrew schools across the country, is perhaps the most telling condemnation of Jewish education in America I can think of...
...The Talmud said, "Great is study for it leads to love...
...Your readers deserve, and expect, better than this superficial treatment of a serious subject...
...I felt that his struggle to teach his son gave each of us another option to consider in expanding the horizons for Jewish education...
...Litman does those who have a serious commitment to vegetarianism a grave disservice when she uses such pejorative phrases as "warm cowsflesh," thus reducing the problem to an emotional level...
...If moment is planning to consider the question, of vegetarianism, which is surely not all that appropriate to a Jewish magazine, then at least present the issue properly...
...As a director of an afternoon Hebrew and Sunday religious school, and a past teacher in afternoon schools, I know that our schools often lack the creativity, the money, the talent, the time, and the energy to really achieve what could be achieved...
...Claire Upton Chicago, Illinois...
...I would like to know that he used his additional knowledge to improve our Jewish world...
...But there are religious schools in this country, even afternoon schools, where there are exciting and stimulating classrooms, dynamic, knowledgeable teachers and good learning...
...However, I take serious issue with his last sentence...
...Thanks also to Steve Rich for mentioning his use of "Mi Yodea" as a method of counting laps...
...If Lushy's study on a one-to-one basis with his family leads to love of all the people of Israel, as well as love of Hebrew and love of learning, then Yasher Koach...
...In it, Milch states...
...As my running improves, I'll reach the last verse and then I'll have to extend the song: "Arbah esrei mi yodea...
...The afternoon Hebrew school gets students when they are tired...
...But the major problem in their approach, as I understand the article, is Lushy's aloneness...
...If she is attempting to be understanding of and supportive of vegetarianism, then she misses the boat...
...the method of killing the animal, or the author's reaction to the red blood spilled, are entirely superficial...
...Mike Jackson Anaheim, California Appetites To the Editor: I've read Viqui Litman's article several times and I still can't make up my mind whether she's making fun of vegetarianism or trying to deal seriously with it...
...And I agreed with some of his criticism of the congregational schools...
...Sherry Bissell Costa Mesa, California More Joggers To the Editor: Many thanks for your "Judaism and Jogging...
...and I'm certain that the intimacy with his father-teacher is much to be desired...
...Lushy missed all of those opportunities...
...I've found it very effective in increasing concentration...
