...Not all of these...
...How beautiful the earth your beauty makes ! There was full grandeur in Olympian Zeus...
...But it's much too high...
...Do not heed Warm Aphrodite, lovely, voluptuous, Their keen, insistent prophecy, but lead Breathed in the marble . . . Ares flamed his way...
...As I walked in the blue noontide Is it worth quietness, In autumn by the riverside, And heart's ease...
...Yea Gulls in Flight October Had Greece a glory to compare with this • gypsy king, what though your reign be brief...
...The brave death-pageant of the dying year . . . But where were glories to compare with these On far-flung hills there gleams your gallant fire Immortal birds above immortal seas...
...Shiny and cold to touch, There were many folk of immediate kin Don't spend it on rainbows and stars, But somehow I knew just who was coming...
...Don't spend it on dreams and such...
...young and laughing god, whose wistful eyes What templed curve on the Acropolis Reflect the ardent azure of the skies, Gleamed in the morning sun more silvery Whose voice is eloquent of hidden grief, Than these bright burnished breasts...
...I wonder if I shall know long before But put it aside for a night That death is coming to visit me When the clouds are dark and black, If the cock crows in the kitchen door Then take out your shiny coin That he is bringing company...
...There came a white Dove unto me, Is it worth peace...
...If the moon should give you a coin, This started me into softest humming...
...WILFRED ROWLAND CHILDE...
...The north wind's silver bugles...
...NORMAN JOHNSON...
...I In thy high city of pale gold, Shall seek much farther Steep-spired, majestical and old, Before I buy...
...What though above your twilight-song you hear Color and grace sang in Tanagran clay...
...In the august three-towered town, How much is love worth...
...MARGERY ATWOOD TODAHL...
...And buy the moonbeams back...
...CATHERINE PARMENTER...
...Light dip of wings against an autumn sky...
...And from his height Like fairy gems they cluster 'round your kneesWhat passionate god held earth so small a thing...
...That wears thy glory for a crown...
...Freer of flight The sapphire sparkles in your mountain lakes, What Hermes went in bronze...
...In thy serene, most plaintive town It's pretty to look at, That wears thy lilies for a crown...
...Mild and benignant as thy blessing, Some day I'll find love The air was balm, cool and caressing...
...October 20, 1926 THE COMMONWEAL 585 POEM S Gity Virginal Guilty Love On the feast of thy nativity How much is love worth...
...And passed in roseate mists apart I shall search still for it To hide in my unworthy heart...
...Company Coming caution I opened the door and a broom fell in...
...That does not demand On that soft azure breath he came Peace and quietness Within a wheel of silver flame, From my hand...
...RAYMOND KRESENSKY...
...On thy birthday, 0 Mother and Maid, I shall not purchase The Dove of my dreams made me afraid, Your love...
...Over the land...
...flaming spirit of our heart's desire...
...MARY CAROLYN DAVIES...
...What marble wing The ruby and the topaz in your trees, Lifted more gracefully...
